Does religion belong in the schools?

Does religion belong in the schools?

The question of whether religion should be taught in the schools has become one of the most heated educational topics of recent years. Some suggest that children should be able to pray, read religious materials, and even receive religious instruction in the public schools, while others contend that virtually no reference to religion should ever […]

Helping your child develop money sense

Helping your child develop money sense

Many kids grow up with little education about economic matters from their families or school. One poll indicated that only 35% of parents discuss money issues with their children. As a result of this neglect, kids approach adulthood poorly prepared to manage their own finances, make sound money decisions, or even understand what’s going on

Ecological Awareness as a family

Ecological Awareness as a family

A revolution seems to be taking place in contemporary culture. Many children, inspired by the new concern being placed on protecting the environment, are heeding the call and developing a new “eco-awareness” that may be transforming our society. All across the country, there are classrooms of kids working on projects designed to rid the planet

Types of crying - Part 1

Types of crying – Part 1

Many expectant and new parents are worried and believe that they will not be able to learn to recognize why their babies are crying. Believe me, if you put your mind to it, within a very short period of time, usually no longer than a week or two, you will usually be able to recognize

Picking and giving pets

Pets can be wonderful for kids, providing companionship and great learning experiences. Dogs and cats are most common, but others-birds, fish, rabbits, gerbils and other rodents-are popular too. The advantage of having a dog or cat is that, with a little luck, it can be a companion and playmate to your child for many years.

Toys to AVOID for babies and little kids

Don’t give your child toys that have small parts that can be swallowed or become lodged in a child’s windpipe, ears or nose, such as doll accessories, small snap-together blocks of beads or puzzles with small pieces. CPSC has developed the “truncated cylinder test tube,” now available in retail stores. This clear plastic tube allows

Souvenirs to collect on trips

Acquiring souvenirs can be a high point of the trip. Just decide on some criteria for spending money on them. Discuss beforehand what kids can and cannot buy. Establish limits and stick to them. Allocate travel money for their items but encourage them to enhance their buying power with some of their own money. Many

Travel games

Travel games

There are many favorite games which require no equipment and are perfect for passing the time in many situations, especially in the car. These listed don’t work for children under the ages of 2 or 3. For the very young, hand games, music, identifying objects by color and rotating toys work best. Once children are

Sun protection for kids

Start your child very young on a lifetime of protective skin care. While being outdoors is healthy and necessary, too much exposure to direct sun is not. • Keep a baby under a year old out of the hot summer sun altogether, if you can. Dress him or her in lightweight, light-colored clothing and, always

Left-Handers

Left-Handers

In Grandma’s day it wasn’t unusual to hear that the right hand was the “angel’s hand” and the left, the “devil’s hand”. Few people today are so thoughtless, but right-handed parents might look closely at such tools as ladles, butter knives and can openers and even certain toys before they label left-handed children awkward. A

HOW IT WORKS

A Seal of Approval review involves a multi-step process conducted over an eight-week period.

Parents and children, experience and review submitted products and services either already released or coming to market.

Participants fill out questionnaires for each product or service they test. They score based on 13 levels of criteria including quality, appeal, design, price, packaging, directions, desirability, stimulation, replay factor, and more. Results are based on both statistical averaging and comments received by testers.

There are three testing periods each year:

FALL ’24 June 1st June 24th July 31st August 15th
HOLIDAY ’24 September 1st September 24th October 31st November 15th
